Questions
Setup questions
How do I add the keyboard?
Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard and choose MindType. Then tap MindType in the list and turn on Allow Full Access. In any app, touch and hold the globe key and choose MindType.
Link to this answerWhy does MindType need Full Access?
iOS lets a keyboard use the network and share data with its app only with Full Access. The MindType keyboard uses it to start and stop recordings in the MindType app, to insert the transcript, to save AI action results to History, and to send text to our server when you tap an AI action or TTS.
The keyboard does not log your keystrokes. It sends text only when you tap an AI action or TTS.
Link to this answerCan I type without Full Access?
Yes. The letter keys work without Full Access. Dictation and AI actions need it, and they show how to turn it on when you tap them.
Link to this answerHow do I switch between keyboards?
Tap the globe key to move to the next keyboard, or touch and hold it to pick one from the list. On iPhones with Face ID, the globe key sits below the keyboard.
Inside MindType, the keyboard button in the bottom row switches from dictation to the letter keys.
Link to this answerWhy does MindType open when I tap the mic?
iOS does not give keyboards access to the microphone. The MindType app records the audio, so the first tap on the mic opens it and starts a session. Go back to your app and keep talking.
While the session is on, later taps start recording from the keyboard and the app stays in the background. After the session ends, the next tap opens the app again.

Why does the orange dot stay on?
iOS shows an orange dot while an app uses the microphone. During a session, MindType keeps the microphone open so that the keyboard can start the next dictation without opening the app.
MindType writes audio to a file only while a recording runs. Between recordings, it discards the audio. The dot goes away when the session ends.
Link to this answerHow do I end a session, and when does it end by itself?
Tap End in the MindType Live Activity. Swipe down from the top center of the screen to see it in Notification Center. On iPhones with a Dynamic Island, it also shows there.
The session also ends by itself:
- After a period with no dictation. The default is 5 minutes. To change it, open the MindType app and pick 1, 5, 15 or 60 minutes under Turn off when inactive.
- About 10 seconds after you lock a device that has a passcode.
- When Low Power Mode turns on.
- When a call, Siri or an alarm interrupts audio.
- When headphones or another audio device connect or disconnect.
After a session ends, your next tap on the mic opens MindType again.
Link to this answerDoes it work offline?
No. Dictation, AI actions and TTS all use servers, so they need an internet connection. Typing works offline.
If you dictate without a connection, MindType keeps the recording on your device. It tries the upload again the next time you open the app and saves the text to History.
Link to this answerWhich languages can I dictate in?
MindType does not set a language. The Whisper model detects the language you speak and writes the text in that language. Accuracy varies with the language, your accent and the background noise.
Link to this answerHow long can one recording be?
Up to 5 minutes. From 4:30, the keyboard and the Live Activity show when the recording will stop. At 5:00, MindType stops the recording and transcribes it. Time spent paused does not count. For a longer prompt, start a second recording.
Link to this answerCan I dictate with AirPods?
Yes. Open the MindType app and turn on Use Bluetooth microphone. It is off by default, because the headset microphone can switch AirPods to a call mode that lowers music quality while the session is on.
Link to this answerWhat happens if MindType closes during a recording?
MindType keeps the recording on your device and tries the upload again the next time you open the app. When the text arrives, MindType saves it to History. If five tries fail, MindType deletes the recording and notes this in History.

What does each action do?
- Proofread fixes grammar, spelling and punctuation and keeps your voice.
- Rewrite makes the text clearer and keeps the meaning.
- Shorten cuts filler and keeps the facts.
- Reply drafts a short reply to a social post that you paste.
- Postify turns rough notes into a short social post.
- TTS reads the text aloud. The setup screens call it Read aloud.
Each action uses the text you selected, or all the text in the field when nothing is selected. The result opens in a preview, where you can replace your text, insert the result or copy it.
Link to this answerWhere do I find the actions on the keyboard?
With the letter keys showing, the actions sit in the row above the keys. In dictation mode, tap the wand button in the bottom row to see every action.
Link to this answerWhich model do the actions use?
xAI's Grok 4.1 Fast, through OpenRouter. MindType uses this one model today, and you cannot pick another one in the app.
Link to this answerCan I make my own action?
Yes. Open the MindType app, go to the Actions tab and tap the plus button. Give the action a name and an icon, and write the instructions that the model should follow. The action then shows on the keyboard.
For prompts, try an action that turns a spoken ramble into one short paragraph and a numbered list of steps, and tells the model to keep every requirement you said and add nothing new.

Does MindType work on iPad?
Yes. MindType runs on iPad with iPadOS 17 or later. The keyboard, the AI actions and the session work the same way as on iPhone, and the setup steps are the same.
Link to this answerHow do I get back to my app after MindType opens?
Tap the name of your app in the top-left corner of the screen. You can also swipe between apps or use the App Switcher. Keep talking while you switch, because MindType is already recording.
Link to this answerDo my history and actions sync between iPad and iPhone?
No. Each device keeps its own history, settings and actions. To use a custom action on both devices, create it on each one.

Where does my audio go?
When a recording stops, the app sends it to MindType's server on Cloudflare. The server sends it to Inworld, which transcribes it with Groq's Whisper model. Our server keeps no copy. The privacy policy has the full details.
Link to this answerIs my history uploaded?
No. History stays on your device, and MindType does not upload or sync it. To clear it, open the History tab in the app and tap Clear All.
Link to this answerDo I need an account?
No. MindType has no sign-up and no account. The app creates a random install ID so that our server can limit how many requests one install sends.
Link to this answerDoes the keyboard log what I type?
No. The keyboard sends text only when you tap an AI action or TTS, and only the text that action needs.

The keyboard does not appear
- Check that MindType is in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Touch and hold the globe key and choose MindType.
- In password fields, iOS always shows its own keyboard.
- Some apps do not allow other keyboards. Try the same step in Notes to check.
The mic does not start
- Turn on Allow Full Access for MindType in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > MindType.
- Allow the microphone in Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Open MindType from the Home Screen once and finish the setup screens.
- If a session just ended, your next tap opens the MindType app to start a new one.
The text does not insert
- Wait until the keyboard stops showing Transcribing. Long recordings take longer.
- If you moved to another field, the keyboard shows Insert last dictation. Tap it.
- The app saves every transcript in History. Open the History tab and tap the entry to copy it.
- Check your internet connection. Dictation does not work offline.
My recording stopped at 5 minutes
MindType stops each recording at 5 minutes and transcribes it, so the text of those 5 minutes still lands in the field. From 4:30, the keyboard shows how many seconds are left. To keep talking, tap the mic and start a second recording. Each recording lands at your cursor in turn.

Our server accepts 60 requests a minute from one install. Wait a minute and try again.
